On Tuesday, June 9, 2020, the Alberta Government announced that theatres would be included as part of Stage 2 of the province’s Relaunch Strategy plan.

We are excited and welcome this news from the Alberta Government, but want to let you know that this is only the first in a number of steps that need to take place before we are able to once again perform safely for you in the Max Bell Theatre.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic in March, we have collaborated with and followed the advice and leadership of all governing agencies responsible for the health and safety of our public and our staff. This includes the Province of Alberta, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and the City of Calgary Emergency Management Agency. The safety of our patrons, staff, and artists is our number one priority going forward. This shall remain so.

The Alberta Government has provided new guidelines towards theatre and artist safety, and we will be working with all agencies towards creating a safe space for our patrons, our artists, and our staff and volunteers. But this will take some time. These guidelines, among many things, require two meter physical distancing. That has not changed. And so our ability to currently present plays in our 750-seat theatre also has not changed. Our doors will remain closed for now.

As we learn and collaborate with our partners more in the months ahead, we will update you on what you can expect from Theatre Calgary as we navigate these challenging times.

As always, we appreciate the ongoing support and understanding from our community, and we hope that Calgarians and their families continue to remain safe and healthy.
